The mayor of Ierissos (pop 4k), a village on the northern Chalkidiki peninsula, was held hostage at the City Hall along with his cronies who sold out the community in the latest outrage to visit this idyllic land. Gold miners Aktor and El Dorado plan to turn the place into a toxic dump, before, during and after extracting gold in them thar hills.
Greece is littered with gold and silver and all of the other sought after minerals that make the world go round, petroleum included. Funny how they left that off the news narrative when discussing the public debt, which was never meant to be paid back anyway. The nature of the scam reveals itself in the Public Private Initiative schemes (PPI) used globally to siphon wealth from it’s rightful owners to the pockets of elites.
All that glitters!
The world has been acclimatised, tuned in to goings on at Syntagma square in Athens where tear gas and molotovs are the order of the day but the real action clocks in the provinces. Greeks are saddled with a debt most never saw coming. City dwellers will suffer the worst effects of technocratically imposed EU/IMF austerity but in the outlying provinces, insult and injury got there first and livid locals aren’t taking this lying down.
As police re-enforcements rolled in from Thessaloniki, the people stood firm so their electricity was switched off. At the main entrance of the local mine, they were met with rubber bullets and smoke grenades. The determination to make locals eat shit and like it means this situation will not be over anytime soon. The shareholders of Aktor and El Dorado own the police and politicians, how do you think it will all end?
